Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo automobiles SPA is an Italian luxury car manufacturer and subsidiary of the Stellantis group. The company was founded in Milan in 1910 by Giuseppe Merosi. Alfa is an acronym of the founding name, A.L.F.A(Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili).

Alfa's first car what's the 24HP, had early success, but unfortunately, due to financial constraints and the onset of World War 1, and a failure to obtain government contracts for the war effort, the company was on the verge of winding up when a young entrepreneur Nicola Romeo stepped in and offered a vision for the future.

After a fruitful war supplying arms, the company changed its name in 1920 to Alfa Romeo and commenced production of cars as there were parts for 105 cars in storage since 1915^[1]; the first of these cars to bear the Alfa Romeo badge was the Torpedo 20 -30 HP.

Golden years of Motor Racing

In 1923 Ugo Sivocci drove the first racing car with the Quadrifoglio symbol ^[2], achieving a great win at the Targa Florio Italian road race.

 Since the notable win, Alfa Romeos have competed successfully in Grand Prix motor racing, Formula One sports car racing, touring car racing, and rallies competed for both as a constructor and engine supplier.

Alfa Romeo won the inaugural world championship Grand Prix in 1925; the race victories gave a sporty image to the marque, and over the years, famous drivers like Enzo Ferrari, who went on to found the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, and eventually Ferrari.

Nicola Romeo left the company to work on other projects, and the company became state-owned and part of Mussolini’s National Industrialisation, making bespoke cars for friends of the state and the wealthy, cars like the 1937 2900B Touring Spider ^[3]

Post-war, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta 158 and 159 ^[4] proved to be the car to beat in the Grand Prix events, and the introduction of the Formula One single-seat racing was dominated in the early days by Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Badge

The red cross on a white background is the cross of Saint Ambrose and the city of Milan, and the Biscione is a snake swallowing a child; this was the symbol of the House of Visconti rulers of Milan in the middle ages.

The Quadrifoglio logo, a green four-leaf clover on a white triangle, goes back to a good luck symbol used in the early days of Alfa’s racing drivers.

Today the symbol is used on the higher trim models as Quadrifoglio Verde (Green) or Quadrifoglio Oro (Gold).
