Cupra is a subsidiary of Seat S.A. Cupra, itself part of the VW Group; it was the brand name used to replace Seat Racing in 1985. In 2018 Cupra was launched as a stand-alone brand.
Cupra has its headquarters in Martorell, Spain, with a brief to create a contemporary style and performance.
Well, it has certainly done that! Best Coupe SUV-What Car? Awards 2022 for the Cupra Formentor, the Cupra Born has been named Best Small Electric Car of the Year 2022 by What Car?
So how have Cupra achieved this success in such a brief time, head-turning contemporary styling is a feature, and the cars have the performance to match, especially with their new Electric Cupra Born.
The Born has 3 trim levels V1, V2 and V3, and two battery sizes 58kwh and a 77kwh available in the V2 and V3 trim levels. There are also higher-performance versions of V2 and V3 trim levels; this is the E-Boost versions that gives you additional mid-range performance and enhanced economy,0-62 7.0 seconds and an increase from a range of 249miles -333miles on a single charge.[1]
The key differences between current trim levels are that V1 has 18” alloys, sensors and a rear-view camera, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, keyless go, and ambient lighting. The V2, in addition to giving you more powerful battery combinations, you get 19” Typhoon Alloys, heated seats, privacy glass and a heads-up display. V3 gives you 20” Hurricane Alloys, fully electric and massaging seats.
The New Cupra Formentor is a beautifully sculpted SUV with exciting new colour choices like Magnetic Tech Grey (Mag Tec) [2] and matte finish, carbon fibre detailing [3],
With performance to match its good looks, the Formentor now includes a plug-in Hybrid version and a limited-edition racetrack-inspired V5.
There are Multiple combinations of trims, drive, and engine options; entry-level is the V1 and V2 with two petrol engines, 1.5 150 PS or 2.0 litre 190 PS, automatic DSG or manual gearbox and a 4x4 option on the larger engine size.
V1 highlights are 18” alloys, Full LED headlights, a digital cockpit, and sports seats with copper detailing. V2 has 19” Exclusive Alloys, Smart interior lighting, and Black leather shell-style racing seats with power adjustment and memory.
245 PS manual or VZ2 and VZ3 have a 310ps automatic DSG 7 speed gearbox option.
VZ1 highlights are additional 19” Exclusive alloy, Black leather shell-style racing seats, Sports bumper styling and sports pedals. The VZ2 adds the power and memory option to the seats, dynamics chassis control and interior lighting. The VZ3 gives you 19” machined copper and black alloys and Brembo performance front brake callipers.
The E-Hybrid Formentor version runs on pure electricity and only uses the engine when the battery needs replenishing. You get the launch experience of an all-out electric car for up to 34miles of zero emissions, with 4 hours of full recharge with a home wall box.
Four trim levels are available V1, V2 and VZ1 and VZ2. V1 &V2 have a 110-w battery performance and 150ps petrol, with a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox, 18” Alloys on the V1 and 19” alloys, a Black shell sports seat and Interior lighting on the V2.
VZ1 and VZ2 have 180w battery performance and 245ps petrol, with 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox, 19” Alloys, Dynamic Chassis, and Interior lighting, additionally on the VZ2 Black leather racing seats with electric adjustment and memory.
For those enthusiasts who want more speed, more carbon, more of everything, and Cupra hopes there are 999 of you, the new Limited Edition 2.5 litre, 7 speed 4Drive DSG V5 could be for you: 390bhp, 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. [3]
The striking design comes in the form of a new colour, Taiga grey, complemented with weight-reducing carbon fibre, a carbon fibre front splitter, a rear carbon diffuser with exhaust pipes highlighted in copper, finished with 20” right copper alloy wheels. The race-inspired interior comes with black leather CUP bucket seats, sports steering wheel on a 12” touch screen with NAV system.
For those who want to take to the track, there is a Torque Splitter which gives you two electro-hydraulically controlled clutches, a drift mode, lowered suspension for a low centre of gravity and an Akebono 6-piston brake system [4] that minimises brake fade and for a smoother take off you have launch control. Once they have gone, they are gone! Literally!
The immersive technology matches the sharp, dynamic lines of the Cupra Leon hatchback or Estate on the inside; you can feel the sports heritage in the grip of the steering wheel.
The 2.0tsi petrol engine 245ps in the VZ1and VZ2 or 300ps is available on VZ2 and VZ3, all with 7 Speed DSG automatic gearbox. 18” machined alloys are available as standard, digital cockpit LED headlights. Higher specifications have 19” alloys and leather sports seats.
The plug-in Hybrid version combines a high-torque electric powertrain with a high-performance petrol engine: 140 mph, 245 PS, 32 miles at Zero emissions on a full 4 Hour charge. Available in 6 speed DSG gearbox and two trim levels, VZ2 and VZ3, both have high specification, with the VZ3 having the 19” Aerodynamic alloys, leather upholstery and matrix headlights as the main difference.
