Ford

Over a century since Henry Ford launched the world’s first mass-production car, the Ford Model T. Ford is still an exciting and innovative brand today. Thankfully, however, it is no longer a choice of one car, one colour.

Henry Ford was 39 years old when he founded the Ford Motor Company; with his introduction of the mass assembly line concept, the company would become one of the world's largest and most profitable. Ford family-controlled for over 100 years. [1]

Safety Firsts

Throughout the 20th century, Ford remained innovative, introducing the Model A, the replacement for the Model T in 1927, which had the first safety glass windscreen and in 1932, launched the first low-priced car with a V8 engine.

Other technical firsts by Ford in 1956 was the “Lifeguard Package”, [4] which included a deep centre steering wheel with flexible spokes, double grip door latches to prevent occupant ejection during a crash, padded dashboard and lap seat belts. There was an update of child-proof rear locks in 1957.

Ford Europe

Investment in the UK and Germany's production plants helped establish Ford as a popular choice, producing affordable small family cars like the quirky nod to American-influenced Ford Anglia, later replaced by the iconic Ford Escort.

The Ford Focus replaced the Escort in return, a trend with the rising popularity of small cars during the 70s. Ford entered the mini market with the  Fiesta hatchback, launched in 1976 and is due to be phased out by the end of 2022.[3]

The top-selling car for the UK in the 1970s was the Ford Cortina, designed in Dagenham to be economical to buy, cheap to run and inexpensive to produce in the UK. The Cortina survived 5 generations and was available from 1962-1982, superseded by the “Jelly Mould” Ford Sierra.

The front-wheel drive Ford Mondeo replaced the Sierra at the start of 1993; this mass-selling car was popular as a company car benefit and is embedded in UK political history as a targeted demographic of the Tony Blair Labour party who were chasing the vote of the mythical “Mondeo Man” [2]

The Way Forward

Ford Motor Company had a tough time at the start of the new century; rising healthcare costs in the USA, rising fuel prices, and faltering world economies led to a falling market share and a decline in sales and profits.

The board introduced a new company strategy “, The Way Forward,” aimed at a new slimmer, leaner company focused on Crossover SUVs and Plug-in Hybrids and preparing the future of electric, software-heavy vehicles.

Here and now.

The modern 21st-century range that Ford offers has embraced that new strategy, still offering value from the runabout Ford Fiesta and award-winning Puma city cars.

The multi-variant Ford Focus is as popular as ever, as are the family-friendly Ford SUVs, like the funky Ford EcoSport, the practical S-Max estate, the spacious Galaxy and the impressive new Ford Kuga. Let us also not forget the head-turning Electric Mustang and E- Mach, giving a range of up to 273* miles on a full charge.

The choice of Ford power units is impressive. Ford offers full electric, plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), self-charge hybrid, mild hybrid, and petrol and diesel. Ford has committed to going carbon neutral by 2035.

There is also a promise of seven brand-new electric vehicles by 2024*

Motor Sport

Since 1896, when Henry Ford reached a top speed of 20 mph in his first car, the Quadricycle Ford, has been involved in motorsport.

Formula Ford, conceived in the UK in 1966, is an entry-level single-seater racing competition and has started the career of many Formula One drivers.

Ford was heavily involved in Formula One for many years supplying engines to several teams from 1967 until 2004; the engines were predominantly designed by Cosworth, a division of Ford racing, and used mainly by Team Lotus and McLaren.

Ford entered Formula One as a constructor in 2000, taking the Jaguar racing team name. The team achieved little success over a turbulent five seasons, and Ford withdrew from the category in 2004, selling both Jaguar racing, which became Red Bull Racing and the Cosworth brand.

Ford has a long history in world rallying, competing since 1973 with the Mk1 Ford Escort success continued with the Escort RS1800 and the RS2000. The Ford Focus World Rally car secured its second title2006 driven by the flying Finns Marcus Gronholm and Mikko Hirvonen.

Commercial Vehicles

Ford trucks since 1908, beginning with the Ford model TT, the 1926 model AA was one of the first Ford pickup trucks or Ranger.

In the UK market, Ford manufactures the Ford Transit, a large goods vehicle with multiple options of a panel van, pickup, or chassis cab. Ford Transit is also available as a light van called the Ford Transit Connect, and the highly successful Ford Ranger pickup series has been available since 2011.

Personal Contract Hire (PCH) or Business Contract Hire (BCH) a Ford is a clever way to get a better Ford model on an affordable budget, and there are many tempting Ford models to choose from.

Keeping an eye on increasing prices Leasing a Ford with the option of an inclusive maintenance package has the benefit of scale; you can benefit from competitive fixed costs on your Ford servicing, future-proofing your budget.

Ford is focusing on tomorrow with its new cars and power units, and at Tilsun Leasing, we can help you choose the right Ford car for you, tailored to your budget, and help you bring it tomorrow today.
