Mini is a British automotive brand founded in 1969; it is currently owned by the German motor manufacturer BMW. Since 2000 BMW has used the brand name on a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands.

The British Motor Company, BMC, produced the original mini; it is considered an icon of the 1960s at only 10ft (305cm) long; its space-saving front-wheel drive layout allowed up to 80% of the floor plan to be used for passengers and luggage.

The British Greek automotive designer Sir Alex Issigonis originally designed the car. It was launched in 1959 as a 2dr car with a transverse 848cc engine, originally marketed as the Austin Seven and the Morris Mini Minor.

The Mini became its own marque in 1962[1], only to be renamed Austin Mini in 1980; this was reversed back in 1988 and finally retained by BMW after the acquisition in 2001; after that, the cars produced before this date are known as the “Classic Mini”.

John Cooper

John Newton Cooper was a Co-founder with his father, Charles Cooper, of the Cooper Car Co; he became a racing legend when his rear-engine chassis changed the face of the sport, which was widely adopted by Formula One and Indianapolis 500 teams.

He was a great admirer of the Mini he developed with BMC, the Mini Cooper and eventually the Cooper S, which rally drivers and ordinary road users adored. His name was licenced by BMW [2], and John Cooper Works (JCW) is a brand used for the higher-performance versions of their cars inspired by the original Mini Cooper.

Current John Cooper works cars boast up to 306 bhp, available in a mini convertible and three-door hot hatch, and now also available in a Mini Countryman and Clubman.

The Petrol 2.0-litre twin-turbo 4-cylinder engine and sports suspension give exhilarating drive; slanted Chrome tailpipes, rear race spoiler, and red detail match the look of the performance.

Celebrating 6 decades of racing, Mini has produced a John Cooper Works Anniversary Edition available strictly limited to 740 models worldwide.

Motor Sport

In the early days, BMC had a special department in Abington, Oxford, where they built specially prepared Minis based mainly on Cooper and Cooper S versions to compete in international rallies and motorsport—winning the iconic Monte Carlo rally in 1964, 65 and 1967, with famous names like Timo Makinen & Paddy Hopkirk.

The cars also won the British Saloon Car Championship in numerous seasons through the 60s and 70s, the British Rally Championship on three occasions and the European Rally Championships in 65 and 66.

The colour synonymous with Mini is “British Racing Green” to find out why you have to go back to 1902 when England was hosting the prestigious Gordon Bennett Motor Cup (predecessor to the Grand Prix). Despite the excitement, they ran into a small problem; the national speed limit in England was only 12 mph.

Snail’s pace, even back then, the race was moved to Ireland, a country free from speed limits but with rich, glorious greenery and according to legend, British racers painted their cars dark green, British Racing Green or BRG, in homage to the Green Isle. **

The mini has always been expertly marketed non so more than in classic films like the 1969 The Italian Job [3] starring Michael Caine and Noël Coward and, of course, 3 red, white, and green Classic Minis.

In 2002 and original Austin Mini Mayfair was featured in the Bourne Identity, in the action scene with Matt Damon’s character chasing through the street of Paris. In 2003 the new Mini Cooper was shown in the remake of the Italian Job.

Mini has gone slightly against the grain when it comes to electric cars, maintaining the standard Mini hatchback shape. It delivers the same feel-good joy the car is famous for, with all the excitement and efficiency of being a fully electric car; put your foot down and its instant Torque from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds.

I can personally vouch for that; I acquired my Mini Electric in 2022.

There are three trim levels available to personalise, Level 2, Level 3 and Resolute, with increasing specifications from model to model.

The lithium-ion battery used across the range is 32.6 kWh; it has an electric range of between 140 to 145 miles* on a full charge and will recharge on a DC rapid charger (50KW) in 36 minutes. More realistically, using a home wall box at 7.4 kW will take about 3 hours and 12 minutes*

Other Mini Variations

Since its conception, the mini brand has always had alternative versions of the standard three-door hatchback; in October 1961, there was the Morris Mini Traveller and the Austin Mini Countryman, both hard a non-structural ash-wood trim on the rear of the body in the style of a pre-war Shooting Brake.

In 1963 there was an Austin Minivan, Pickup, and utility vehicle called the Mini Moke that was available from 1964 onwards; built with a twin-engine and 4 x 4; it was intended for the British Army but lacked enough ground clearance for military use. If you travel around the world’s most famous beach locations, there is a good chance you'll come across a Mini Moke.

The current range of cars available are 5-door or 3-door hatchbacks, available as a Cooper or a Cooper S; both have trim levels of Classic, Exclusive, and Resolute. The engine choice is a petrol 1.5litre   3-cylinder or a 2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with 178 bhp.

If you like the wind in your hair, then there's a convertible with a version of the hatchback that gives you the Cooper and Cooper S the same 3 trim levels, but there's also the option of the 231 BHP John Cooper works version.

The Mini Clubman is a throwback to the Mini traveller with a lot more style and no wood! However, it still has the barn doors at the back. This gives you a great Mini driving experience with plenty of space for family and pets.

Trim levels are classic and exclusive, with a high-level specification engine choice 136 BHP 1.5litre 3-cylinder petrol engine or the 178 BHP Cooper S, or strap everyone in with the 306 BHP John Cooper Works version.

The Mini Countryman

Practicality and space are available in this family SUV; it’s currently the only vehicle in the range that offers a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The three-cylinder petrol engine and the e-motor give you a combined BHP of 125 and an EV range of 31 miles*, ideal when coming into low-emission zones.

The conventional petrol engines are Cooper and Cooper S and 306 BHP John Cooper Works. Three trim levels are Classic, Exclusive, and Untamed. Which “embraces the elements giving you highland green upholstery and unique nature-inspired patterns echoed throughout!” *

Mini is a great brand, and there is no doubt that leasing a Mini is an excellent choice, offering a high level of technology and engineering for the price.

One of the main advantages of Personal or Business Contract Hire is that it can help you budget more effectively. Your monthly payments are fixed, so you'll always know exactly how much you need to set aside. This can be particularly useful if you're worried about your expenses increasing.

Other benefits of choosing a Contract Hire deal

Include a low initial payment and the ability to personalise your lease to suit your needs. Plus, with many different Mini models available on lease, you can get a higher-specification car for your budget.
