SsangYong Motor Company is a South Korean-based automobile manufacturer that originated in 1954. Originally named the Ha Dong Hwan motor workshop, it was a specialist in producing trucks and buses for export.
In 1977 it changed its name to Dong-A-Motor, and after acquiring Shinjin Jeep company in 1974 and the Geohwa Co, a specialist 4x4 manufacturer, in 1986, the company changed its name to SsangYong.
In 1991 SsangYong formed a partnership with Daimler Benz, allowing SsangYong to use Mercedes-Benz technology.
The partnership led to SsangYong officially entering the UK market with the launch of the Musso SUV, the first vehicle using Mercedes technology; additional models using Mercedes technology were launched in 1996, the SsangYong Korando.
In 1997 SsangYong was taken over by Daewoo motors, only to sell it again in 2000 because of deep financial troubles;[1] SAIC, a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer, bought a controlling stake.
In 2010 SAIC sold the company to Mahindra and Mahindra, an Indian multinational automotive manufacturer.
In 2015 SsangYong launched the Tivoli. Within a year of the Tivoli’s launch, the company reported profits for the first time in the modern era.
Mahindra worked with SsangYong to introduce high-performance electric vehicles in South Korea to their mass-market; however, the relationship went sour in 2020, and SsangYong went into administration [2]. The South Korean KG group now owns the company.[3]
Despite ownership issues, SsangYong has continued to produce and develop new motor cars; the current range includes the Tivoli and the Korando, a mid-range SUV and the Musso pickup truck.
The Musso is a well-established, highly competitively priced vehicle in its segment winner of 4x4 pickup of the year What Car pick up of the year 2021 and 2022.
